But we don’t have to look very far if we want to find arboviruses, which are viruses carried by insects such as mosquitoes and ticks. Horse flies and midges, although less harmful than ticks, also do their best to pester the unsuspecting tourist taking a walk in the woods.
Of the three, ticks are the most dangerous as they can carry infectious diseases such as Lyme disease, also known as borreliosis, and which, if left untreated, can have detrimental long-term effects on the heart, joints and nervous system. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) can cause permanent neurological damage if treated incorrectly or too late. Especially TBE may be prevented by vaccination. Vaccination is absolutely essential when planning a vacation in any foreign country.
