Sore Throat

Although it can occur at any time of year, the chances increase during the winter months: badly-aired rooms, overcrowded trains and classrooms are just some of the breeding areas for bacterial and viral infections of the throat.

In general, sore throats may be caused by the following: common viruses such as influenza, breathing through the mouth which causes dryness and soreness, post nasal drip, streptococcus and arcanobacterium haemolyticum, treatment with antibiotics, and more serious illnesses such as cancer, rheumatic fever and AIDS. Sore throat symptoms vary from slight to severe difficulties in swallowing, fever, swollen glands, i.e. swollen lymph nodes, and white patches at the back of the throat. Amongst the most common forms of sore throat, especially in children, are strep throat and scarlet fever both caused by streptococcus bacteria.
