Hay Fever

Seasonal allergic rhinitis is the more correct term for this auto-immune disorder. We think of it usually in connection with the allergy sufferer in the spring: streaming eyes, runny nose, and problems of the upper breathing passages.

This “fever” is a hypersensitive reaction of the body’s immune system to harmless substances. Histamines are produced and are the main cause of the symptoms of the allergic reaction. Rhinitis is not just triggered by pollen but may be caused by mould, which is a type of fungus the spores of which are released all year round. Hay fever is the most common of all allergic disorders, about 15 percent of the population in industrialized countries suffer from it. 04/08
