Insomnia

We need our sleep. Not just our “beauty sleep” but also for the brain to relax and regenerate after a hard day’s work. Lack of sleep causes fatigue, irritability, personality changes, and concentration problems as well as a simple inability to wake up.

Scientifically, sleep may be divided into REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM states. Theses phases are completed several times in a “normal” sleeping period, during which time they alternate from light to deep sleep cycles until it is time to wake up. Healthy people need only a few minutes to fall asleep, i.e. for the first light sleep phase to begin. Sleep deprivation may be caused by everything from obstructive sleep apnoea and stress to medication and teeth grinding. Children’s sleep disorders range from sleep walking to nightmares. One of the most dangerous sleep disorders is sleep apnoea, which is characterised by loud snoring followed by long pauses in breathing. There are lots of solutions, from sleeping tablets to herbal remedies. 12/07
