The term diabetes mellitus is derived from the Greek for “siphon” and the Latin term mellitus meaning sweet from the word for honey, and refers to one of the major symptoms of diabetes, that is excessive urine production. The other symptoms of this metabolic disorder are excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, fatigue, irritability and blurred vision. Diabetes is characterised by high blood sugar levels, that is, glucose in the blood, which is known as hyperglycaemia and which is caused by defects in insulin secretion, or action, or both. Some pharmacists offer services such as information brochures and blood-sugar testing. 11/07
